THE STORY: Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a Scottish writer and physician best known for creating Sherlock Holmes. While studying medicine at the University of Edinburgh, he was inspired by his professor Dr. Joseph Bell, a master of diagnostic deduction whose keen powers of observation became the foundation for Conan Doyle’s famous detective.
Through Holmes, Conan Doyle helped popularize scientific reasoning in solving crimes, highlighting techniques such as fingerprint and bloodstain analysis, handwriting comparison, and tobacco ash study. He was also the first to use ballistics—including bullet trajectory—as evidence in fictional criminal cases, an approach that was groundbreaking at the time and helped shape modern detective work.
Although Holmes never says “Elementary, my dear Watson” as a single line in the books, the words do appear separately. The Light Book features text from “The Adventure of the Crooked Man” (1893), where Holmes first uses “Elementary” in print.
